The walled garden has three distinct areas, the central feature of which is a grassed walkway large enough to take a marquee. Edged with apple trees this garden provides a particularly spectacular scene during early spring when the apple blossom is in full bloom.
The White Garden has been skilfully designed utilising a variety of flowers and plants which provide a succession of white blooms throughout the seasons. A magnificent mulberry tree, said to be about three hundred years old, is a particularly distinctive feature here.
The Victorian walled garden is sub divided into three areas - a rose garden, a garden for shrubs, and an exhibition space for some of the many splendid garden ornaments and sculptures.
The Palm House
The Palm House is very special - a superb classic style glass house with brick base and wooden frame approximately 45 metres long and 6 metres high. It is divided into separate rooms to provide a range of climates which suit the environmental needs of the numerous species of plants. Works of art are displayed alongside antique garden pots and a variety of exotic Mediterranean and sub tropical plants.
Nearby the Swan Walk - a long grassed area surrounded by yew hedges - features a small stone edged square pool in which stands a large bronze swan with wings outspread.
An unusual feature of the walled kitchen garden is a Gingko hedge which runs from end to end along a bed of mauve pansies. The surrounding brick walls feature a highly distinctive capping and in places are fitted with long wooden bars once used to support the overhead canopy which protected early fruit. On the southern side the area is in three sections - one for growing vegetables, another for cut flowers, and the third is a Dutch garden.
The Water Garden
One of the many unique aspects of Dunsborough Park is the Water Garden. The very unusual design uses giant blocks of stone to create several long shallow pools all at different levels. The water flows gently over the stones into each pool until it reaches the Ockham Mill stream at the lower end. A picturesque stone bridge straddles the stream and features a most elegant stone pavilion.
Predictably the Mulberry Garden features a large spreading mulberry tree set in a raised semicircular bed edged with three rows of stone steps. A variety of plants such as bluebells provide its colourful yet natural setting.
The combination of wisteria and viburnum provide a subtle blue background to the Terrace Walk, a sweeping gravel pathway edged with yew. A Rose Walk runs along the outside of the walled garden to produce a variety of colourful blooms throughout the summer. |
